On a trip such as the one described here you can experience the sights, Viennese Balls, and a Volkstanzfest of Vienna. This trip was planned by Drs. Carol and Herbert Traxler, Washington's well-known Tanzmeister (www.viennesewaltz.org) and folk dance teachers and performers, the founding leaders of the Alpine Dancers & Singers (www.alpinedancers.org). The Traxlers frequently travel to Vienna, Herbert's native city, where they often participate in Viennese Balls, and in folkdance festivals and workshops.

The trip allowed for various options for travelers on their own; however, specific suggestions were offered for events, some of which are regularly attended by the Traxlers. The Traxlers can advise individuals on desired alternatives as they share their experience, knowledge and love of Vienna and Austria with you.

We recommend you plan and arrange for:

Generally you can purchase your own ball tickets online. Volkstanzfest tickets are available at the door. Your hotel can probably also help with Vienna Choir Boys and Opera tickets. The Traxlers can advise also on how to purchase tickets to Opera, theater, and other events, or you can purchase on site or online. We like to take a stroll in the large pedestrian-only center of Vienna, visit the Dorotheum, Vienna's famous historic auction house, and sample Viennese pastries at a Konditorei (or two), in case you would like to meet us there.

EVENTS WITH THE TRAXLERS:Herbert and Carol often travel in January to Vienna, and returning in mid-February to Washington. Some of the events we plan on attending, and that we feel will be of interest to our friends among the Alpine Dancers and the Viennese waltzers of Washington, include the following dance events. Warning: please note that the lowest ticket prices may be for students with ID only, and there may be an age limit as well.

See these and other events at the two calendars mentioned above.

According to our online research, the 2007 (see current season!) program for the Vienna Choir Boys is 9:15 Mass at Hofburgkapelle on January 7, 14, 21, 28. Selected Opera and Operetta for the time period in 2007 are as follows. Warning: Lowest price tickets for opera are for standing room, obscured view. Fledermaus will play at the Volksoper on January 5, 19 (EUR4-70) and at the Oper January 4, 6 (EUR10-178). Zauberfloete (Magic Flute) is at the Volksoper January 14, 16, 21, 27 (EUR4-70). Carmen was at the Volksoper January 13, 17, 22, 29 (EUR4-70). Graefin Mariza by Kalman was at the Volksoper January 8, 15, 18, 24, 28 (EUR4-70). The Spanish Riding School has tours daily, except Mondays, EUR15 in 2007. The Spanish Riding School morning exercises were 10-12 daily, except Mondays, EUR12 in 2007.

Changing money. We have been advised that you will get a better exchange rate if you change your US dollars to Euros in Vienna.
